Flat Roof Restoration and Skylight Installation

Strengthening Waterproof Protection in Philadelphia, PA

For this project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we completed a comprehensive flat roof restoration designed to improve the roof’s durability, waterproofing, and overall performance. Flat roofing systems require careful installation and proper sealing to ensure they can withstand heavy rain, temperature changes, and daily exposure to the elements.

The goal of this project was to reinforce the existing roof surface while addressing vulnerable areas that could allow water intrusion over time.

Modified Bitumen Roofing Installation

The restoration began with the installation of new rolled rubber roofing (modified bitumen) over the existing roof surface. Modified bitumen is commonly used for flat roofs because it provides strong waterproof protection and durability in changing weather conditions.

Our team carefully extended the roofing material to the edges of the roof to ensure proper drainage and full coverage.

To strengthen the roofing system, we also installed:

  • A new cap sheet to reinforce the surface layer

  • Custom-bent slag stop along the front and back edges of the roof to secure the roofing material and prevent water infiltration

These components help protect vulnerable roof edges and maintain the structural integrity of the roofing system.

Flashing and Seam Sealing for Waterproof Protection

Flat roofs depend heavily on proper flashing and sealing to prevent leaks. During the project, we addressed all critical areas where water could potentially enter.

This included:

  • Installing flashing where necessary

  • Sealing all seams, pipes, and roof penetrations

  • Using roofing cement and fabric tape to create a durable, watertight seal

These steps ensure the roofing system performs effectively and remains protected from moisture intrusion.

Structural Repair to the Roof Edge

As part of the restoration, we removed and replaced a 4-inch closed eaves box that had deteriorated over time. Roof edge components are important because they help guide water away from the structure and protect the transition between the roof and the wall.

The new eaves box was properly installed, flashed into the roofing system, and securely tied into the existing wall. This upgrade restored the structural integrity of the roof edge and improved long-term durability.

Skylight Installation with Proper Curb Flashing

To complete the project, we installed a new Philly skylight, which enhances natural light while maintaining full weather protection.

The installation included:

  • A new skylight curb

  • Proper curb flashing integrated into the roof system

Correct skylight installation is essential on flat roofs to prevent leaks and ensure the skylight remains fully sealed against the elements.
